Pope Francis, who passed away on 21 April 2025, left an enormous legacy as a reformer and global leader.
But how do you remember him?
This is the man who brought 12 Syrian refugees back to Rome on his plane. Who washed the feet of female prisoners. Whose encyclical, Laudato Si’, is considered one of the most important documents written this century. Pope Francis’ emphasis on mercy, peace, and social justice was groundbreaking. His focus on climate change, poverty and interreligious dialogue challenged the status quo. And the image of him praying alone during the pandemic, in an empty St Peter’s Square, will not be forgotten.
For Catholics across the UK, Pope Francis was inspiring and challenging…

Pope Francis was not just a leader, he was a living expression of the Gospel. He embodied what it meant to be ‘shepherds with the smell of the sheep,’ that deep pastoral closeness that the Columban mission has long cherished.
COLUMBAN CO-WORKER AJESH ABRAHAM, AUSTRALIA

I was impressed by Pope Francis’ stamina, his wisdom and his tranquil spirit. His ardent faith, love of the poor and
an openness to all continue to inspire us to live out the mission Jesus gave us.
FR ANTHONY CHANTRY, MISSIO NATIONAL DIRECTOR IN ENGLAND AND WALES

The Pope’s choice of the name Francis signalled the focus of his leadership, based on humility and care for the most vulnerable. He consistently challenged us all to go to the peripheries—to listen, to serve, and to stand alongside the poor.
KATE NIGHTINGALE, SVP CEO
Pope Francis was a breath of fresh air, choosing to become a Pope of the people for the people. His humour, generosity and humility were his strong points. He loved nature like St Francis and brought our attention that we have one earth, one world embodying unity.
